Turn Waste Into a Learning Adventure This March Holidays

As Singapore moves towards its Zero Waste vision under the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the nation aims to increase its overall recycling rate to 70% by 2030, while reducing waste sent to landfill per person by 30%.

With Global Recycling Day on 18 March 2026 happening right in the middle of the March school holidays, there is no better time to turn family downtime into a fun, hands-on adventure in sustainability. From getting creative with upcycling projects to exploring how everyday habits can make a difference, this holiday offers a chance to teach your little ones the joy of caring for the environment—while making memories together.

To mark the occasion, here are three engaging activities to try with your family, each designed to inspire mindful living, spark curiosity, and bring a little eco-friendly fun into your March holidays.

Our country has taken a thoughtful approach towards balancing development with environmental stewardship. From managing natural resources to planning green spaces across the island, these efforts have shaped Singapore into the city we know today.

To learn more about this journey, you can bring your family to the Sustainable Singapore Gallery located within Marina Barrage. This interactive space introduces you to our nation’s sustainability story through six themed zones, allowing you and your little ones to explore different topics at your own pace.

Together, you can explore interactive exhibits that introduce climate change, featuring activities that help kids understand their own carbon footprint. Along the way, discover how Singapore secures its water supply, and how greenery, waterways and innovations like solar energy, smart homes and cleaner transport contribute to a more sustainable city. The experience also showcases creative installations made from recycled materials, and concludes with a chance for families to make a meaningful sustainability pledge together.

The gallery is open daily from 9am to 6pm (except Tuesdays), making it an easy educational outing during weekends or school holidays.

Discovering Treasure in Trash with EPIC Upcycling Workshop

If your kids enjoy crafts and getting hands-on, upcycling workshops can be a fun way to spend time together while learning how everyday items can be reused in creative ways.

Led by experienced facilitators, EPIC workshops offer a range of sessions that introduce you and your family to the art of upcycling. Along the way, you will discover imaginative ways to work with materials such as paper, glass, plastic, PVC banners, leather and textiles.

From paper making using recycled magazines and newspapers to crafting papier-mâché sculptures, your little ones can look forward to a variety of activities. They can also transform glass jars into terrariums or soy candles, while plastic bottles can be upcycled into self-watering planters for small plants at home.

Suitable for beginners and DIY enthusiasts alike, these sessions offer a relaxed and engaging environment where you and your children can experiment, create and bring home something made with your own hands.

Lend a Hand at a Beach Clean-Up with SG Beach Warriors

While recycling and reusing often begin at home, community initiatives also play an important role in caring for the environment. Joining a beach clean-up with SG Beach Warriors allows your family to take that step outdoors, while helping to protect Singapore’s coastal ecosystems.

Guided by the belief that “One Less Trash Is One Less Threat,” this community-led initiative gathers volunteers to remove marine debris while raising awareness about ocean conservation. As you walk along the sand cleaning up, it becomes easier for children to understand how everyday waste can affect marine life.

This month, SG Beach Warriors is hosting cleanup sessions on 22 March and 28 March, welcoming both first-time volunteers and returning participants.

For many families, the experience becomes more than simply clearing debris. It is a chance to spend time outdoors while showing your children how small actions can help protect the natural spaces around them.
